BBC Bitesize

BBC Bitesize has a nice description of nuclear fission. Note that you do not have to know about 'fusion'.

How to answer assessment questions

It is important to read the questions carefully and answer the question.

If the question is 'What is a beta particle?' the answer would be 'an electron'. Everything else is 'icing on the cake'. i.e they describe it - it has a small mass, it comes from the nucleus when a neutron changes to an electron + proton, it has a negative charge. These are all things things which describe the beta particle - they don't say what it is. There is a subtle difference.

The key information - its an electron!!

Example

What is a camera? Ans: Its is a device for taking photographs.

Wrong answer - It weighs about 90 g, sometimes its black or silver, it has a lens, it might be digital and I got one for Christmas.

Get the idea?
